In partnership with the CT Family Support Network, families and caregivers of individuals with communication differences are invited to join us on Zoom for an hour of learning. Register here.
Strong communication skills lie at the heart of social engagement, academic growth, literacy development, community participation, overall independence, and so much more. Access to communication is also a basic human right. However, some people face challenges with communication given diagnoses that impact their speech and language access, either from birth or following a significant life event. Fortunately, our technology-driven world has countless solutions that can support this development and provide access to meaningful interactions.
This session will provide an overview of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices and corresponding strategies that can, and should, be considered for people with communication differences across the lifespan. Screen time considerations will be included to give an understanding of the power that technology can have when used appropriately. Practical resources and action steps will be offered, with the intent of helping families and service providers feel confident and supported while embarking on their unique communication journeys.
Learning Objectives:
1. List at least 3 facts about AAC.
2. Describe at least 2 research-based best practices within the field of AAC.
3. Apply at least 2 strategies that can support a total communication approach at home.
