Defining AT & AAC
"Assistive technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities."
- U.S. Dept. of Ed. Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
AT includes "products, equipment, and systems that enhance learning, working, and daily living for persons with disabilities."
AT is not always complex and expensive. Some tools are simple to use and can be purchased for a low price. Tools are available along a continuum of intricacy and cost, ranging from low/lite tech, mid tech, and high tech options.
"Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) means all of the ways that someone communicates besides talking. People of all ages can use AAC if they have trouble with speech or language skills. Augmentative means to add to someone’s speech. Alternative means to be used instead of speech."
Considering AAC
People of all ages can benefit from using AT and AAC, including those with developmental disabilities (e.g. autism, cerebral palsy) and those with acquired disabilities (e.g. aphasia following a stroke).
Low/lite tech AAC includes paper boards with symbols and text that a person points to in order to convey a message.
Mid tech AAC includes battery operated devices with pre-recorded messages stored on buttons. A person pushes the buttons to convey a message.
High tech AAC includes tablets and computers that have apps and software with customizable features and buttons. A person pushes a button to convey a message using synthesized speech.
A person with physical and mobility needs can access AAC using alternative means such as eye gaze, head tracking, switches, keyguards, or a stylus.
A person does NOT need to demonstrate any prerequisite skills (e.g. cause/effect, 1:1 correspondence) before AAC is introduced.

A thorough AAC evaluation must be completed in order to identify which AAC device(s) is best for an individual's unique needs.
An SLP should lead this evaluation, with input from caregivers and other professionals.
Implementing AAC
Communication partners and contexts matter! Consider where the individual is using AAC and with whom they are speaking in order to guide meaningful implementation.
Communication partners such as parents, siblings, spouses, caregivers, teachers, etc. must receive training about the AAC device in order to best support the individual using it.
Modeling moves mountains! Communication partners who model the reasons and the ways to use an AAC device put the individual at an advantage for communicating efficiently and effectively.
